PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE

Public schools are very good at reacting to events. But they aren’t very good at planning for the future. Our community deserves a dynamic Strategic Plan that truly “shoots for the stars.” The Yakima School District’s strategic plan is up for review in 2026. We need leaders managing that discussion. I’m the ONLY member of the board who HAS A CHILD ATTENDING YAKIMA PUBLIC SCHOOLS. I bring parent voice, and multi-generational Yakima perspective to the conversation.

IMPROVE DELIVERY OF REMOTE EDUCATION

The district has spent millions of dollars to be able to produce remote education: from neighborhood hot-spots that ensure internet accessibility to thousands of laptops and other hardware. This investment of taxpayer dollars cannot be wasted. It might be as benign as a snow-day, or it may be due to a natural disaster, but the need for remote education will return. And while it should always be our first priority to deliver in-person education, we should capitalize on the massive investments in technology that have been made by enhancing teacher training as they utilize this new resource. We owe it to our students and teachers, and we owe it to the taxpayers.

STICK TO THE BASICS

Let’s get past the politics and focus on academics. We live in a hyper-sensitive and polarized political climate. We can and should celebrate diversity and promote inclusion without succumbing to cynical political theories that segregate and divide our kids based on the color of their skin.
